Chica und Heinz Schaller Award Ceremony 2024

The award ceremony for the Chica and Heinz Schaller Research Prize took place on 4 December 2024 at Heidelberg University’s Marsilius Kolleg. Prof Dr Rohini Kuner, Chair of the Foundation’s Executive Board, opened the event, followed by an introduction by Prof Dr Hans-Georg Kräusslich, Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board.

The laudatory speech was given by Prof. Dr Anne Ephrussi from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, who paid tribute to Dr Mandy Jeske’s scientific career and her outstanding research work. In her ‘2024 Schaller Prize Lecture’, the prizewinner presented her work on piRNAs – small regulatory ribonucleic acids that are essential for genome stability during gametogenesis.

The research prize, endowed with 100,000 euros, was presented by Prof Dr Karoly Nikolich, Deputy Chairman of the Foundation. Prof Dr Ralf Bartenschlager, also a member of the Foundation’s Executive Board, gave the closing remarks.

The Chica and Heinz Schaller Research Prize has been awarded annually to outstanding young scientists in Heidelberg since 2005.
